Do giant whales ever ram or collide with submarines or ships in the ocean? Are vessels able to survive the momentum from the impact?
As an offshore sailor, I have repeatedly had the experience of a whale, and even two, swimming alongside my sailboat for a much as an hour at a time, sometimes so close I could reach over the side to touch it. Yet never once did any whale bump the hull. On one occasion a large fin whale dove under my boat. The whale was much bigger than my sailboat, which was a 42 ft cutter.. As the flukes went into the ocean on one side, I looked over the other side and could see the head and body of the whale under the keel. It surfaced on the other side and then swam alongside for a while, but never touched the keel. Whales seem to have a very good sense of where their bodies are, and fortunately seem very kind and friendly to sailors. I treasure the times that they graced me with their companionship as I travelled across their domain. Booking.com
